phYsiOGA: yoga practice designed by a physiotherapist
Physiotherapy and yoga practice are naturally a beautiful fit. Physiotherapists are the recognized specialists in skeletal, muscle, and nervous tissue function, dysfunction, injury prevention and rehabilitation. Physiotherapists use exercise therapy as one of their key tools for; strengthening weak muscles, stretching tissues in tone, improving balance and proprioception, returning the body to activities of daily living or preparing for sport, refining postural alignment and body mechanics as well as conditioning for the nervous system. Exercise therapy can be specific to one area or system in the body, or it can be used in a general way to promote overall well being and healthy living. Physiotherapists trained in assessing and addressing the biopsychosocial aspects of an individual will incorporate emotion regulating, mindfulness or meditative practice to enhance mood and reduce emotional stresses. Emotional work is an integral part of healing as it allows individuals to shift from a neurobiological response to injury or dysfunction and to reconceptualise pain.
Yoga practice at its core has similar tenants to physiotherapy: there is a fundamental physical practice of yoga asanas (poses) that is always paired with yoga sutras and gunas (the philosophical fibers that make up yoga). The physical component in yoga focuses on improving muscular strength and endurance, balance and proprioception, core strength, flexibility, agility and better postural alignment.
Pairing physiotherapy with the practice of yoga has always been Polina’s dream. Come out to one of her classes to share your energy with hers!

physiotherapy + yoga = wonderful!
Physiotherapists that have obtained yoga teacher training certifications are therefore uniquely equipped to deliver a yoga practice that’s intricately weaved with physiotherapy principles, and vise versa, blending in yoga philosophies into their physiotherapy treatments and home exercise programs. Physiotherapy principles can help enhance the benefits and remove the barriers of yoga for individuals who may have injury or other limiting factors. If you are currently in physiotherapy care, and are receiving yoga training as part of your healing journey, sessions may be covered under your extended health insurance plan. Please speak to your physiotherapist about how to submit yoga sessions as physiotherapy care. Otherwise, yoga receipts will qualify as a tax deductible medical expense in your tax returns.
